WASHINGTON, D.C—Saphron Initiative welcomes the decision of the 3 million educator-strong National Education Association to unconditionally cut all ties with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an advocacy group which has campaigned to ground itself in schools across the United States over the last two decades.
The ADL has long marketed itself as an expert advisor to school communities on antisemitism and other forms of bias. However, despite its reputation as a civil rights organization, the ADL is not the social justice educational partner it claims to be.
Since October 2024, educators, students, and education organizations from across the United States, including Saphron Initiative, have been pushing school districts, unions, and stakeholders to put an end to ties with the ADL. The NEA’s announcement marks a decisive victory in that call.
The NEA’s move—which concluded the union “will not use, endorse, or publicize materials from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), such as its curricular materials or statistics”—is a positive sign for educators and students across the country.
Saphron Initiative calls on the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to follow the NEA’s lead in cutting ties with the ADL, setting the gold standard in ethical organizational ties.
